Foretelling Love At Halloween

The tradition of foretelling the future and finding out one’s love life at Halloween started a long time ago in Ireland, where the mysterious Druids  lit sacred bonfires on the hilltops and performed ancient rites at midnight on the 31st October.

The divinations and folk magic connected with Halloween spread from Ireland to the British Isles, and eventually made their way throughout Europe and accompanied immigrants across the ocean to the strange shores of North America and the new world promising freedom and a better way of life.

In the United States and especially in the rural parts of New England, many young, unmarried women still observe two Halloween love traditions. The first tradition demands that they carry a candle-lit lantern to a spring of water and gaze into its depths at midnight. If this is done in complete silence, the reflection of their husband to be is said to appear. If no reflection appears, then this is an indication that her marriage will not take place during the next year.

The second method which is popular among girls who want to see into the future as to what their husband-to-be and children may look like requires the girl to go to a spring of water at sunrise on Halloween. She is to carry a glass which contains a broken egg into which a handful of the fresh water is poured. The girl must then gaze into it in complete silence.

If she follows these instructions very carefully and if marriage and children are in her future, a picture of her family-to-be will appear in the egg and water mixture. However, if no vision is seen, then marriage and children are not in the girl’s future yet.
