Some Old Halloween Customs : The Church Porch Watch
The old Halloween custom known as the “Church Porch Watch” was a widespread practice in Wales, as well as some regions of England, up until the last part of the nineteenth century.
At midnight on Halloween, those who wanted to find out who in the village was going to die during the coming year would assemble in the church porch and wait there all night, keeping a watchful eye for the ghosts of those who were marked by Death to come and knock on the door.
Throwing the Shoe
The Irish have a very simple way of finding out the future known as‘throwing the shoe’. If someone wants to know his future, he removes one of his shoes on Halloween night and throws itover the roof of his house. If the shoe lands on the ground pointing away from his house, then this is a sign that the owner of the shoe will soon be travelling in that direction.
If, however, the shoe lands on the ground pointing towards the house, then there is no travel in the following year for the wearer. It is good luck if the shoe lands with the sole down. However, if the shoe lands with the sole up,this may be a sign of coming bad luck or even death.
Another Halloween future-telling involving shoes calls for a girl to take off both her shoes when going to bed on Halloween night and place them at right angles to form the letter T. The following saying must then be repeated:
I cross my shoes in the shape of a T;
Hoping this night my true love to see,
Not in his riches or his worst array,
But in the clothes he wears every day.
The site of the girl’s future husband is then meant to appear by her bedside or come into view if she looks over her right shoulder. Often, he will show himself to her in a dream. If no there is no apparition then this means that she will not marry before the next Halloween.
